8 He was five feet ten and one half inches tall and had blonde hair and blue eyes. John C. was mustered into the Confederate forces on May 15, 1861 in Lynchburg after first enrolling in Liberty (Bedford) that same day. He was a member of Company C 28th Virginia regiment of the Old Dominion Rifles throughout August 31, 1861. From Sept. of 61 until November of 62 he was a member of Capt. J.R. Johnson’s Co., Light Artillery Co. C 28th Virginia Regiment. He then joined Capt. William J. Pegram’s Battalion, Light Artillery Co. C 28th Va. Where he served until the remainder of the war. On December 13, 1862 John was wounded in battle. He fired the first Confederate cannon at the battle of Gettysburg. On April 3rd 1865, he was captured at Petersburg and sent to City Point Prison on Hart Island in New York Harbor. On June 20th 1865 he took the Oath of Allegiance to the United States and was thereby released with the rank of Sergeant. .
